Mohs Micrographic Surgery
Mohs Micrographic Surgery is a technique that allows a skin surgeon to remove a skin cancer with the highest possible cure rate. In this staged procedure, the tumor is removed in small layers, thereby preserving the maximum amount of normal skin. Following complete removal of the tumor by Mohs surgery, the wound is repaired. As a result, Mohs offers the highest cure rate for a skin cancer and spares the greatest amount of healthy skin, resulting in an optimal cosmetic result.
Mohs surgery is performed on an out-patient basis in our offices under local anesthesia. Indications for Mohs surgery may include recurrence of a previously-treated cancer, as well as type, location, size and presentation of the tumor. Based on one of these criteria, your doctor may recommend Mohs surgery for removal of a skin cancer.
Mohs surgery is provided at both our Concord and Cambridge offices by Dr. Matthew Zipoli. With this technique, he treats nearly a thousand skin cancers each year.
